Mail, Document, and Distribution Services (MDDS) is UCLA’s premier center for printing, on-campus deliveries, bulk mail, and distribution related services. MDDS is a unit of UCLA Campus Service Enterprises, a division under Gregg Goldman, Vice Chancellor and Chief Financial Officer. MDDS is dedicated to quality, on-time, cost-effective delivery services, posters and documents for the university, its research labs, and the Ronald Reagan Medical Center, as well as for the Center for Health and Sciences through its Receiving and Cylinder departments. Customer satisfaction for MDDS is the number one priority.
Director David Aberbuch began his career with MDDS a little over fifteen 15 years ago. Mr. Aberbuch noted when he became director, “the department needed to move past the 1950s.” In a unique attempt to bring about change, Mr. Aberbuch gave the staff copies of the short book Who Moved My Cheese? by Spencer Johnson, illustrating the importance of adapting to change in one’s work environment and life. He then implemented changes such as a uniformed dress code to enhance professionalism and promoted morale by updating the potluck get-togethers to office-funded parties. The MDDS team would also be encouraged through physical activity, playing soccer scrimmages across various departments. With the staff’s cooperation, MDDS continues to succeed in moving forward.

The impressive standings that MDDS now maintains is a tremendous accomplishment. Director Aberbuch shared with his staff, at a staff appreciation event in July 2019, an internal audit of the unit that further recognized their achievements. Their most recent Customer Satisfaction Results, as reported by UCLA Organizational Effectiveness & Development, have averaged a customer satisfaction score of 89.4, surpassing past years while some departments reaching high scores of 97.73! The excellent reputation the staff continues to earn is what distinguishes it as a team. The unit encounters up to 1000 daily interactions with university customers as the MDDS fleet not only makes stops on campus, but also around the Westwood Village and to the numerous university affiliated sites located in West Los Angeles and Santa Monica.

It is safe to say that David Aberbuch’s goal to move MDDS and staff, some who have been there for over 30 years, away from the 1950’s and into the 21st century continues to improve and succeed. The staff works and plays hard together as a cohesive team while enjoying the satisfaction of a job well-done.
