You may often see the hard workers of UCLA’s Facilities Management (FM) team all over campus, pulling up in their trucks and carts, clearly identified by their blue and white striped shirts. Together, they handle everything from maintenance and repair, custodial services, grounds and landscape maintenance, minor construction and alterations to energy management, utilities services, warehouse and materials management, space inventory, sustainability services (recycling and waste management), and financial procurement and information technology support.
This team of more than 900 individuals, who carry out jobs both on and off campus, strives to maintain a culture of health, safety and service as they support UCLA faculty, staff, students, and visitors in our world-renowned academic facilities, medical enterprises and research environments.
According to recent data, FM recorded a 53% reduction in Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recordable injury incidents compared to the previous fiscal year, representing one of the most significant year-over-year safety improvements in its recent history. Even more notably, OSHA recordable injuries in FY 25-26 decreased by 87% from Fiscal Year 2013–2014, reflecting sustained progress over more than a decade.
FM leadership attributes the decline to expanded safety training, increased hazard awareness, strengthened accountability measures and the adoption of preventive practices across operational units. Employees are encouraged to identify hazards, report concerns and participate in ongoing safety initiatives.
The department notes that improvements reflect long‑term, incremental efforts rather than a single program or intervention. The data indicates that consistent attention to safety protocols and workplace conditions has contributed to reduced risk, improved operational reliability and strengthened employee engagement.
