Several exciting changes have taken place within UCLA Fire! The department recently welcomed a new chief, Rico Barboza, who rejoined UCLA Fire after also serving Alhambra and Torrance fire departments during his 19-year career.

Chief Dana Johnson, who led UCLA Fire for 28 years, has accepted a new role as chief fire and life safety officer for the UC System, ensuring continuity of services among all UC campuses.

One of Johnson’s final tasks was to formally promote Barboza in a special COVID-19-precaution-friendly Zoom ceremony, and in turn, Barboza promoted Jamie Ellazar from deputy fire marshal to assistant fire marshal. Ellazar has served UCLA fire for four years through Title 19 inspections, Fire-1 coverage and fire investigation. She will be responsible for the Title 19 program in her new role.

The department also recently added new equipment with which to better serve and respond to the Bruin community. A 2020 Unruh-type 6 fire truck has been acquired, signaling a new era for the fire safety program. This new model offers all the newest features, including new and improved tools and functionality to increase both efficiency and effectiveness. It also accommodates four passengers, which will offer increased response capabilities on campus and assist training for young fire personnel.
