UC regents approve planning budget for student housing project

901 Levering Student Housing

The University of California Board of Regents has approved a preliminary planning budget to explore developing 901 Levering Ave. The approval, granted during the Regents’ July 2025 meeting at UCLA, allocates $8.75 million from housing reserves to support schematic design, environmental review and early planning efforts for the high-rise residential complex. The project, if approved, will replace five aging, seismically deficient buildings with a 19-story, fully electric structure featuring apartment-style units and add accommodations for 1,130 undergraduate students.

Located in the heart of Westwood Village, the site is adjacent to several UCLA-owned properties and within walking distance of campus and the future Metro D Line subway station. The development aligns with UCLA’s long-standing commitment to providing guaranteed four-year housing for first-year students and two years for transfer students.

The new building is expected to target LEED Gold certification or higher and exceed California’s Title 24 energy efficiency standards by 20–30%, reinforcing UCLA’s sustainability goals. The apartment-style units will primarily consist of four-bedroom, eight-person layouts.

Subject to CEQA review and final design approval, UCLA anticipates returning to the Regents in winter 2026 for full budget and construction authorization. If all goes as planned, early site work—including demolition and utility installation — could begin in summer 2026, with student occupancy targeted for Fall 2030.
