Embracing change, celebrating innovation

Article Vert_Michael Beck

I have been reflecting on the 2022-23 academic year and the numerous efforts we have undertaken to advance our programs and services on campus this year. It's truly inspiring to see the dedication and commitment that each one of you has shown towards initiatives such as the IT Digital Roadmap, HR Transformation, the new South Bay Campus, campus safety, the UCLA Sustainability Plan and various other initiatives. Your hard work and innovation have propelled us forward, and for that, I express my sincere gratitude.

In our journey of progress, it is important to remember that change is the only constant. As we strive to meet the ever-evolving needs and expectations of the campus community we serve, we must continue to embrace innovation and change. Among those are changes related to our leadership team. We welcomed Curtis Plotkin as the new assistant vice chancellor for Environment, Health and Safety, and witnessed the retirement of Chief Tony Lee from UCPD and the hiring of Interim Chief John Thomas. We are also saying goodbye to Lisa Koerbling, who is retiring as interim director of Events & Transportation after 32 years of service to UCLA, and welcoming Tony Lucas as the department’s new executive director.

Leadership changes can cause uneasiness and uncertainty; however, they also provide a valuable opportunity to bring in fresh perspectives and ideas. It is during these times of transition that we can truly stretch ourselves, explore uncharted territories and challenge the status quo. Each new addition to our leadership team brings unique strengths and experiences that will undoubtedly contribute to the growth and success of our programs and services.

Let us not forget that our collective efforts have the power to shape the future of our campus. By fostering an environment of collaboration, creativity, and open-mindedness, we can continue to push the boundaries of what is possible. Embracing change and remaining innovative are essential components of achieving excellence.

I want to express my deepest appreciation to all of you who have been instrumental in driving our programs and services forward. Your commitment to making a positive impact on our campus community is truly commendable. As we move ahead, let us remember that our shared vision and dedication will guide us through any challenges that lie ahead.

Together, let us embrace the opportunities that leadership changes bring and continue to elevate our programs and services to new heights.

At the same time, let’s remember our commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion as a team and as members of the Bruin community. These values foster a sense of belonging, encourage innovation and creativity, enhance employee engagement and satisfaction, and promote a fair and respectful work environment. They create opportunities for diverse perspectives to be heard, which leads to better decision-making and organizational success; things we strive for each and every day. UCLA celebrated Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander Heritage Month in May with a series of film screenings, talks, art exhibitions and food events.

June has been a celebration of LGBTQ+ Pride and the vibrant LGBTQ+ communityan important time to gain better understanding of issues facing this community and explore ways to become strong allies all year round. We can do this by fostering inclusive relationships, creating inclusive spaces and a sense of belonging, challenging biases, listening and learning, and amplifying the voices of those that have been traditionally marginalized.

Thank you for your unwavering dedication and contributions to our institution and to one another.

Sincerely,
Michael Beck
