Leadership and helpfulness go hand in hand

Article Vert_Michael Beck

As I see our team hard at work each day, I am continually inspired by the pride you all take in your work at UCLA and in your lives. Whether assisting with a campus emergency; responding to a request for assistance; volunteering at an elementary school; donating blood; going above and beyond at work; or giving to others, our team demonstrates a thoughtful and authentic form of helpfulness that lifts us all. Actions like these by our Administration team members are important to notice and acknowledge.

One of the core components of leadership is to help others achieve their goals. To give of yourself in a manner that allows people to develop skills and experiences that enables them to grow professionally and personally. It is also about demonstrating how much you care. This is what being a UCLA Bruin is all about.

With that in mind, our Administration True Bruin Values Awards are returning this quarter after a three-year hiatus. I encourage you to take notice of those who deserve some recognition and personify the True Bruin Values of respect, accountability, integrity, service and excellence. Nominations are open and ongoing throughout the year.

In closing, I hope you all took time to learn, celebrate and reflect during Black History Month in February and have done the same during Women’s History Month in March. I encourage you to read the words of five of our leaders in our Ask the Administration Leadership Team column and think about ways that you can honor and support the women in your families and workplaces.

I also urge you to watch this fantastic Women's History Month video highlighting some of the many women who make UCLA No. 1, including our very own Chief of Staff Michelle Sityar.

Thanks for leading the way, in all the ways you do, and for contributing to a wonderful winter quarter!

Sincerely,

Michael Beck
