Every October, UCLA celebrates Sustainable Transportation Month to highlight how Bruins can commute to campus all year round without driving alone. As transportation is California's leading source of greenhouse gas emissions, promoting sustainable commuting is a key initiative in the UCLA Sustainability Plan to reduce single-occupancy vehicle commuter rates.
Sustainable transportation also provides other benefits for Bruins, such as avoiding the stress of traffic, exercising from active transportation options and saving money on the cost of gas and a parking permit. UCLA Transportation provides programs and services to help Bruins commute sustainably and affordably, such as subsidized transit passes, bicycle resources and discounted carpool permits.
Outreach events across campus in October featured giveaways and opportunities for Bruins to learn about their sustainable transportation options. These events included the Sustainable Transportation Fair at Wilson Plaza, where UCLA Transportation staff answered questions about commuting, and the Central Ticket Office provided students with transit passes. Transportation’s annual Bike Luncheon, also at Wilson Plaza, gave cyclists the opportunity to connect and build community with one another.
To further incentivize Bruins to adopt an eco-friendly commute, those who pledged to try sustainable transportation during October were entered to win one of several prizes, such as gift cards to Target and AMC Theatres or UCLA football tickets. More than 1,000 Bruins took the pledge, demonstrating a strong commitment to reducing their carbon footprint and embracing more sustainable commuting habits.
