To enhance the health and well-being of all UCLA community members, Facilities Management is now supplying free menstrual-care products in restrooms across campus.
The SWC BruiNecessities committee, part of the UCLA Undergraduate Students Association Student Wellness Commission (SWC), initiated an effort to provide menstrual hygiene products for students in February 2017. SWC later engaged and collaborated with UCLA Administration to expand the program campuswide.
With the new effort, UCLA becomes the first institution in the University of California system to provide free menstrual products campuswide, affirming that access to these items is a matter of personal dignity and equity.
California’s Menstrual Equity for All Act of 2021 advises universities to stock 50% of their restrooms with an adequate supply of free menstrual products. UCLA is going above and beyond the recommendation — making the products available in men’s, women’s and gender-neutral restrooms.
