Incoming UCLA chancellor visits ‘the Hill’

Incoming UCLA Chancellor Julio Frenk and Assistant Vice Chancellor of Housing & Hospitality, Pete Angelis tour campus housing

Julio Frenk recently visited ‘the Hill,’ UCLA’s on-campus student residential community to meet with team members and learn more about what makes housing and dining at UCLA so highly regarded. He will officially join UCLA as the campus’s seventh chancellor on Jan. 1, 2025.

The day started with a tour of UCLA’s bakery and commissary, where Frenk learned how UCLA creates nearly everything it serves from scratch and works to minimize food waste and maintain quality throughout all operations. He was then given a tour of Olympic and Centennial halls, visited the Makerspace and got a first-hand look at one of our student residence rooms.

Next up was a stop at the Study at Hedrick, one of our most popular boutique restaurant locations and home to UCLA’s artisanal bakery, where much of the fresh bread served in our dining and catering options is masterfully created. The visit ended with a tour of Bruin Plate, one of our most popular all-you-care-to-eat restaurants, and a family-style lunch in the private dining room.

A U.S. citizen originally from Mexico, Frenk is a distinguished global public health researcher. For the past 15 years, he has been a higher education leader at Miami and Harvard University, championing the health, education, and well-being of people around the world.
