Martinez and Woo recognized with True Bruin Value Awards

Lizett Martinez, director of custodial and grounds, and Chris Woo, grounds supervisor.

Two members of Facilities Management have been recognized by UCLA Administration for their commitment to their work, their department and the university by demonstrating what it means to be a True Bruin.

“The True Bruin Values Awards honor employees who lead with integrity, serve with purpose and inspire excellence across UCLA Administration,” said Rashmi Umdekar, manager of HR IT products in Digital & Technology Solutions and member of the True Bruin Values Award Committee.

Lizett Martinez, director of custodial and grounds, was selected for the commitment to service, integrity and leadership she has demonstrated since joining Facilities Management 13 years ago. Her nominator noted that she keeps the department grounded, steps up when needed and supports teammates with professionalism, empathy and a calm, solutions‑focused approach.

Among her accomplishments, Martinez led the implementation of UCLA’s campuswide tree maintenance and conservation plan and strengthened custodial operations by piloting an innovative job assessment and tasking tool. She also delivers talks to share resources, listen to concerns and build trust with team members.

A proud Bruin alumna, Martinez earned a bachelor’s degree in history and sociology in 2009. She is currently completing the Leadership 20XX program as part of her ongoing commitment to professional growth.

Colleague Chris Woo also received an Administration True Bruin Values Award this quarter. The grounds supervisor, described as “a cornerstone of Facilities Management Grounds,” was nominated for his consistent dedication to leadership, integrity and service. In addition to managing the largest grounds team at UCLA, Woo oversees complex operations with exceptional accountability, including a multi‑million‑dollar waste contract and the redesign of campus waste infrastructure. His nominator noted that this work has advanced UCLA’s Zero Waste goals, supported the transition to pesticide‑free landscaping and strengthened partnerships across campus.

Woo is also known for stepping in wherever he is needed –whether coordinating waste operations during high‑pressure events, supporting student sustainability projects or ensuring building managers receive timely, reliable service. Colleagues praise his responsiveness, problem‑solving and respect for every member of the UCLA community.

Nominations for the next round of awards will open in fall 2026. Up to three recipients are selected twice per year. Each receives an award certificate, a breakfast celebration and award ceremony with Administrative Vice Chancellor Michael Beck, a True Bruin Values jacket and two event tickets from the UCLA Central Ticket Office. Other recent honorees include Bonny Bentzin, Al Ferrone, Mike Flaxman, Raquel Lopez, Chris Silva and Emily Tunteri.
